Abundances of cool supergiants in the SMC young cluster NGC 330 ?

چکیده

NGC 330 is the brightest SMC young cluster and contains many bright supergiants. This cluster has aroused special interest, since the earlier abundance determinations indicated an abundance lower by a factor ∼5 than in the SMC field young population. Taking advantage of our previous high resolution analysis of a sample of type K supergiants in the SMC field (Paper I and II), we analyse 6 cool supergiants in NGC 330, in order to compare in an homogeneous way, the metallicity and abundance ratios of various elements in NGC 330 and in the field of the SMC. The main results may be summarised as follows: • the deficiency of NGC 330 is found to be of [Fe/H] = −0.82±0.11 dex (mean and rms for 6 stars) whereas the field stars had a [Fe/H] = −0.69±0.10 dex (mean and rms for 6 stars). A slight difference may exist between the field and the cluster stars, but this difference is small. • the abundance pattern of the∼20 elements studied, is similar to that of the field supergiants, except for a few elements: oxygen’s star to star scatter is significantly larger in the cluster; the very heavy neutron capture process elements are less enhanced in the cluster. • lithium is detected in five stars and is low, indicating that the stars underwent dilution (mean value and rms for the 5 stars: log (Li) ' 0.1 ± 0.2 dex).

The Interstellar Reddening and Metallicity of Ngc

A reddening of E(B-V) = 0.12 ± 0.02 has been determined for NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from spectrophotometry of Β stars in the cluster. This high reddening helps explain many of the anomalous low metallicity estimates for the cluster. Preliminary analysis of Coudé spectra of Κ giants in the cluster indicates a high value of 3.5 to 4.5 km s"1 for the micro-turbulence, and a met...

Chemical abundances from Magellanic cloud B stars

In recent years, B stars have been established as reliable tracers of present day abundance patterns. They yield an independent set of abundances from He to Fe which can be cross-checked against other sources such as H ii regions and cool supergiants. In this paper, we present purely spectroscopic analyses of 9 non-supergiant B stars (13 < mV < 15), 5 of which located in the young populous clus...

On the nature of the blue giants in NGC 330 ⋆

The young SMC cluster NGC 330 contains a number of blue stars that lie above the main-sequence turnoff found from our isochrone fitting and below the position of the blue supergiants. We used our own, new spectroscopy and published data on these stars to investigate their possible nature. Problems in interpreting the evolutionary status of the blue giants have been found in several preceding st...

Massive Stars in the Smc

In this paper we discuss how the Small Magellanic Cloud is the ideal laboratory in which to study massive stars in a low metallcity environment. We review the observational data for OB stars in the SMC concentrating on those aspects of their spectra which provide information on processes which may strongly influence their evolution, namely mass-loss, rotational mixing and mass-transfer. We illu...

Carbon , nitrogen , oxygen and lithium abundances of six cool supergiants in the SMC ?

Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen abundances were derived from high-resolution spectra of 6 cool supergiants of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Oxygen-to-iron ratios (mean value [O/Fe] ≈–0.18 dex) are found to be similar to those found in young objects in the LMC and the Galaxy. This result is discussed in terms of chemical evolution. A mean deficiency of the carbon-to-iron ratio of [C/Fe] ≈–0.3 dex and ...
